Quilts to support Dollies Making A Difference

We have so many ladies who volunteer their time and creativity to Dollies Making A Difference.  Two of these talented ladies are quilters; Carolyn McGraw and Judy Kaneko.  Each lady has created beautiful crib-size quilts which they deliver to to us with the simple request of “Please do whatever you like with this quilt, as long as it supports Dollies Making A Difference”.

A few years ago we sold a collection donated by Carolyn at a local art fair, and the proceeds went to support our DMAD financial grant program. We’ve also donated quilts to families of Wounded Heroes of America at Christmas and to children at an Early Head Start Center in Hollywood.

We thought you’d enjoy learning more about Carolyn and Judy:

Carolyn: “I grew up in Connecticut.  My mother made all of our clothes growing up, even into college!  She was an amazing seamstress and taught Art.  Our home was always full of fabrics and notions.  I majored in Textile Design (prints & wovens) in college and worked in NYC. I have always loved making things.  I took just one simple quilting class years ago in Cambridge, MA but I am mostly self-taught and don’t follow the rules!  I did inherit several traditional quilts from my Grandmother.  What I enjoy most about quilting is the process.  I like to work alone with few distractions.  I also knit, crochet, sew and weave. I used to make quilts for hospitals, then Venice Family Clinic.  I love children!  I make quilts to be used either as a blanket or as an art piece, and hope they begin a dialogue.  I “feel the love” around the table at Dollies Making A Difference and this compels me to contribute my quilts to benefit the children you serve.”

Judy:  “I began quilting back in the 80’s before there were quilt shops, rotary cutters, patterns, etc.  My first class was in a wonderful person’s living room.  Now I take take classes, visit quilt shows, watch YouTube videos, join quilt guilds and attend quilt retreats. All of this means I am constantly learning and my quilting ability is constantly evolving.  I found you can only quilt so much for family members, so I now donate my quilts to various worthy charities such as Dollies Making A Difference. Oh, and I do keep a few favorites!”

We thought you would enjoy seeing a few of these beautiful quilts… really pieces of art! ENJOY!
