Dollie maker Deidre sent an email to a close friend of hers Toni Hargis who lives in Chicago, Illinois and is president of Caring Kid Connections. Â Deidre asked if Toni knew of any children who might need some extra TLC in the form of our dollies and colorful teddy bears.
Toni knew just the person, and contacted her friend  Bev Greenberg “Greenie”, who is her son’s first grade teacher!  “Greenie” makes a yearly humanitarian trip to Tuskegee, Ghana on behalf of  The Francis W. Parker School in Chicago.  This school – which is the only independent school in Chicago where students from 14 grades share a single building – and The Tuskegee International School in Ghana are “sister schools” established through the Chicago Sister Cities Program.
The non-profit organization Caring Kid Connections facilitates this school partnership, and explains it this way: Â Students from kindergarten through 8th grade correspond with each other and learn about their different cultures through drawings, letters, and projects. Â Students are encouraged to share information about their country, school, and family that will widen understanding and relationships between the two. Â The goal is to instill compassion, understanding, and global responsibility in children, touching lives and building distances and lasting friendships around the world.
Dollies Making A Difference sent 30 dollies and 30 colorful teddy bears – each with their own crocheted or quilted blanket – with “Greenie” to Ghana for the children in the nursery, kindergarten and first grade. Upon her return, “Greenie” said the children loved them and would we want to contribute more next year? Â OF COURSE!
